The Career Skill That Matters More Than Any Job Title

July 30, 20252 min read

I recently wrapped up a 6‑week group coaching program.

Members from different industries, different paths — but the same challenge: finding a career direction that truly fit.

In just five sessions, the shift was clear.

They’d stopped searching — with a clear vision and a plan, their decisions were now anchored in their values.

💭 Why We Get Stuck When Careers Feel Uncertain

Even in a stable job that question can still linger:
“Is this really the right path for me?”

And from what I’ve seen — and lived — we often fall into three traps:

  1. Following someone else’s definition of success
The formula sounds familiar: good school, great job, steady promotions.
But hitting every milestone doesn’t always mean you’ll feel fulfilled or energized.

  2. Waiting for someone to give you the answer
It’s tempting to hope a mentor, boss, or recruiter will say, “This is the right move.”
It feels safe… but it also keeps you dependent on outside approval.

  3. Ignoring how you feel
Results matter — but so do your emotions.
If your gut says something’s off, that’s not noise. That’s a signal.

🔑 What I’ve Learned About Building a Career That Actually Fits Your Life

  1. Find your own answer
Before you decide, ask: Does this connect with the life I want to build?

→ Write down your top 3 non‑negotiables for work, then check your current role against them.

  2. Decide based on alignment, not approval
When you’re clear on the kind of impact you want to make, decisions get lighter and easier.

Before saying yes to anything, ask yourself out loud: “Would I choose this if no one knew about it?”

  3. Listen to your emotions
They’re not a weakness — they’re your early warning system.

Keep a one‑week “energy log” — note what tasks or meetings leave you drained vs. energized.

  4. Know the difference between what looks good and what feels good
Only one will give you energy that lasts.

Make two lists: “Looks Good” (external perks) vs. “Feels Good” (daily satisfaction) — compare and see which one you’ve been chasing.

  5. Take action, even in small steps
Thinking won’t change your life. Moving will.

Pick one decision you’ve been overthinking and make a small move on it today — send the email, schedule the call, or block time to start.

Careers aren’t built by chasing the “right” title — they’re built by knowing what matters and choosing it, again and again. That’s how you make work fit your life, not the other way around.
